I’ve been creating worksheets to help children learn the Yoruba language, but progress has been painfully slow. I took a moment to analyze the time spent versus the finished product, and I was close to giving up. Yet, on closer inspection, I realized the issue wasn’t the design itself, but the fact that while English has so many ready-to-use design elements, Yoruba doesn’t. I found myself constantly switching between desktop Canva and mobile Canva to handle orthography issues, and spending a lot of time adapting designs to fit the limited Yoruba elements available.
Sigh.
It seems I’ll need to relearn how to make fonts all over again. I’m thinking of titling it Ìyá Yorùbá or Yorùbá Dùn.
Tongue-in-cheek, Iya Yoruba would have been perfect because, without the tone marks to help you interpret my intent, you can interpret it as either “Yoruba mother” or “Yoruba suffering,” which perfectly captures my current frustration.
